Cryotherapy for Pain

What is Localized Cryotherapy?

Cold air (-80 C | -112 F) used locally in the area of pain, unlike a cold chamber where the whole body is exposed to cold. Most effects of Cryotherapy are locally induced and therefore do not affect the surrounding tissue.

How does Cyrotherapy help?

Cryotherapy is used for the treatment of pain in joints and muscles caused by illness, sports injuries or overuse.

Cryotherapy is also used by athletes for quicker recovery.

Cold works in three ways:

  • It relieves pain, by slowing down nerve conduction
  • It relaxes muscles
  • It helps reduce tissue swelling

What conditions can Cryotherapy be used for?

Cold treatment can be used in:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Spinal arthritis
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Gout
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sclerosis pain
  • Spastic paresis
  • Radicular symptoms (sciatica)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Joint pain
  • Back pain
  • Osteoporosis & Neuropathy

Other conditions where Cryotherapy can be used are:

  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Trigger points/myalgia
  • Increased muscle tone/tense muscles
  • Postoperative, i.e. after surgery
  • Prior to training to achieve increased mobility, endurance, energy, analgesia for sore muscles and joints (due to exercise, not due to injury)
  • Rehabilitation after injury

Who is not eligible to receive Cryotherapy?

Cold treatment should not be used:

  • If a person has a skin disease
  • Near a pacemaker (but fine with all other prostheses)
  • Open wound
  • If a patient has Raynaud’s disease
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)
  • Cryoglobulinemia
  • Severe anemia

How is Cryotherpay performed?

The application of localized Cryotherapy is for approximately 3 minutes and has an immediate pain relieving effect. This pain relieving effect is more prominent after 3-4 treatments, performed immediately in series of 1-2 day intervals.

Following the recommended 10-20 treatments, a longer-lasting analgesic effect will be achieved. The pain relieving effects can then be maintained as needed. There is an immediate effect on edema | swelling and mobility.

Can you combine Cryotherapy with Laser therapy?

Cryotherapy and Laser therapy when used in combination provide synergistic effect in providing superior pain relief. We recommend combining Cryotherapy with Laser therapy in our practice for superior pain relief.

How much does Cryotherapy Cost?

For maximum effect, the recommended number of treatments is 10-20

Price per treatment is US$80.

We offer treatment course packages of:

  • 10 treatments for US$600
