Capsaicin Treatment
Capsaicin is a chili pepper extract with pain relieving properties. It is a neuropeptide-releasing agent selective for primary sensory peripheral neurons. Used topically, capsaicin aids in controlling peripheral nerve pain.
Qutenza is a commercially available capsaicin 8% patch that has been approved by the FDA to treat post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). A single, 1-hour application can provide up to 3 months of pain relief in patients with PHN. Dr. Kalava and his team are experts in safely administering treatment with continuous monitoring, as Qutenza can cause intense pain and increase in blood pressure.
Qutenza patch might be covered by your insurance. If not covered, the patch will cost $1,000.
