Nitrous Oxide for Depression

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Also called “laughing gas”, Nitrous Oxide is routinely used in the operating rooms during surgical procedures and also at many dentist offices to allay anxiety and to reduce pain and discomfort with dental procedures.

What does the treatment consist of?

The treatment consists of inhalation of a 50:50 mixture between oxygen and Nitrous Oxide.  The treatment duration is 60 minutes and you will be comfortably positioned in recliner. Your mental status, oxygenation, blood pressure and pulse will be continuously monitored throughout the treatment.

What are the side effects?

Side effects are mild but can include nausea and increased heart rate.

Can I drive after treatment?

You will need a driver after treatment but can expect to resume normal activities within a couple hours

What are the contraindications/who are not candidates for Nitrous Oxide therapy?

Anyone who has severe cardiac disease, is in their 1st trimester of pregnancy,  has had pneumothorax, retinal surgery, middle ear surgery, pulmonary hypertension, or has a severe psychiatric disorder is not a candidate for treatment.

How do I prepare for Nitrous Oxide treatment?

You should refrain from eating any solid foods for 8 hours and can have clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to your therapy.

How much do Nitrous Oxide Treatments Cost?

  • Consultation: $300
  • Single Treatment: $600

How can Nitrous Oxide be effective in treating treatment resistant depression?

There is a growing evidence of science which points to robust, lasting anti-depressant effects of Nitrous Oxide.  The proposed mechanism of action is due to its effects on NMDA receptors akin to ketamine. Unlike IV Ketamine, which requires 6-8 treatments, most patients receiving Nitrous Oxide only need one 60 minute treatment. Also there is no need for placement of an IV.
