Morton’s Neuroma Cryoneurolysis

What is Morton’s Neuroma?

Morton’s neuroma is a benign thickening of an intermetatarsal plantar nerve, most often occurring between the third and fourth toes. It typically causes localized burning, tingling, or sharp pain in the ball of the foot, especially when wearing tight or high-heeled shoes

What is Cryoneurolysis?

Cryoneurolysis also called cryogenic neuroablation or cryoablation is a minimally invasive treatment that freezes the affected nerve to interrupt pain signals. Using a small probe (Without an Incision/cut)  the nerve is cooled to approximately -88C, which damages the axons but preserves the outer nerve sheath, thus reducing the risk of stump neuroma formation.

What happens to the nerve after it is frozen?

The nerve is injured but not destroyed and the body will regenerate a new normal nerve.

Will I have immediate relief after the procedure?

Usually, it takes up to 4 weeks for the nerves to regenerate, so relief can be seen within the 3rd-4th week.

If I have relief how long will it last?

Relief varies from patient to patient. Relief can range within a number of months to years.

How is the Procedure Performed?

  • Ultrasound is used to accurately locate the neuroma.
  • The skin is numbed with a local anesthetic.
  • A cryoprobe is inserted, (WITHOUT Incision) and freezing cycles are applied.
  • The entire treatment takes less than 30 minutes, and it’s performed in-office.
70-80% patients respond favorably to this procedure

What is the difference between Cryosurgery that Podiatrists Offer and Cryoneurolysis?

Cryoneurolysis is less invasive (NO Incision) than Cryosurgery. Also the Iovera system cools down to -88C Compared to -50 to -70 C with Cryosurgery and hence gives a superior result.

How Much does a Cryoneurolysis Procedure Cost?

Each Cryoneurolysis Procedure Costs $1,500.

Consultation is required prior to procedure which costs $400

Does Insurance Cover Cryoneurolysis ?

No, Insurance does not cover Cryoneurolysis

Am I an ideal candidate?

Ideal candidates are those who:

  • Have confirmed Morton’s neuroma via physical exam or imaging (MRI).
  • Have not responded to conservative treatments such as shoe modifications, orthotics, NSAIDs, or corticosteroid/alcohol injections
  • Are seeking a minimally invasive option without surgical excision
