Slipping Rib Syndrome

Expert in Tampa, Florida

Slipping Rib Syndrome (SRS) is a condition characterized by the hypermobility of the lower ribs, specifically the 8th to 10th ribs, due to weakened or disrupted interchondral ligaments. This hypermobility can lead to the partial dislocation (subluxation) of the costal cartilage, causing irritation of the intercostal nerves and resulting in pain or discomfort in the lower chest or upper abdomen.

Symptoms

  • Sharp, stabbing pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen
  • A sensation of “popping” or “clicking” in the ribs
  • Pain exacerbated by certain movements, such as twisting or bending
  • Pain that may radiate to the back or shoulder
  • Tenderness upon applying pressure to the affected area
  • Pain triggered by activities like coughing, laughing, lifting, or bending

Causes

Slipping Rib Syndrome can result from various factors, including:

  • Injury to the chest from contact sports (e.g., football, ice hockey, wrestling, rugby)
  • A fall or direct trauma to the chest
  • Rapid twisting, pushing, or lifting motions, such as throwing a baseball or swimming
  • Congenital weakness (birth defect)
  • Joint hypermobility (abnormally wide range of motion)
  • Overuse of joints leading to repetitive strain injury
