What Is Costochondritis?

Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breastbone (sternum). It can cause sharp, aching, or pressure-like chest pain that may worsen with movement, deep breathing, coughing, or certain positions.

Although costochondritis is usually not dangerous, chest pain should always be properly evaluated to rule out heart, lung, or other serious conditions.

At Tampa Pain MD, we provide comprehensive evaluations and advanced non-opioid treatment options for persistent chest wall pain and musculoskeletal pain syndromes.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Sharp or aching pain near the breastbone
  • Tenderness when pressing on the ribs or chest wall
  • Pain that worsens with deep breathing, coughing, sneezing, or movement
  • Discomfort radiating into the shoulders, upper back, or arms
  • Chest wall tightness or inflammation

Many patients notice flare-ups after heavy lifting, strenuous activity, prolonged coughing, illness, or poor posture.

Possible Causes

In many cases, the exact cause is unclear. Potential contributing factors include:

  • Repetitive strain or overuse
  • Heavy lifting or strenuous exercise
  • Chest wall injury or trauma
  • Prolonged coughing
  • Poor posture or thoracic dysfunction
  • Viral illness or inflammation
  • Underlying musculoskeletal or inflammatory conditions

Because chest pain can have many causes, proper evaluation is important before assuming symptoms are related to costochondritis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and evaluation of chest wall tenderness. Additional testing may sometimes be recommended to rule out cardiac, pulmonary, or gastrointestinal causes of chest pain.

Treatment Options

Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, calming irritated nerves and tissues, and improving mobility of the chest wall.
