What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal Neuralgia (AKA tic douloureux) is a type of excruciating nerve pain that mimicks an “electric shock” like sensation on side of the face. Pain can be triggered with even just opening your mouth, brushing teeth, applying make up and chewing food. It tends be common in women, particularly after the age of 50. Trigeminal neuralgia results in facial pain supplied by one or more of the three branches of the trigeminal nerve. This is usually caused due to disruption of the function of trigeminal nerve.

  • Shaving
  • Touching your face
  • Eating
  • Drinking
  • Brushing your teeth
  • Talking
  • Putting on makeup
  • A light breeze blowing over your face
  • Smiling
  • Washing your face
